How fabulous is this case! We are very excited to have found such a gorgeous item in such fabulous condition. It dates back to the days of long leisurely travel across America by train, before the advent of the aeroplane and short flights of a only couple of hours in the air, rather than a couple of days on a sleeper train. These overnight cases were called train cases for those longer journeys and contained space for all that was needed, space for jewellery, toiletries, personal possessions etc in the top and nightwear and change of clothes in the bottom. Shortrip was a high end brand which made exquisite train cases, in a very elegant and desirable style which is much sought after today and this is one of them. Not many are still to be found in such good condition, they are very rare indeed and a case of this quality bought today would cost thousands (and not have the exclusivity factor or the glamour attached to such a vintage piece). This particular train case has survived in excellent condition. To the outside there are a few knocks to corners, a slight discolouration/tarnish to the gilt hardware and no key. There is a scratch to the top and beneath the handle are the gilt embossed initials 'S McL' which, if your name does not match those initials,we suggest could be covered in a small brass plate in the same style as the Shortrip plaque with own initials.
The inside is exquisite. Inside the lid is is leather covered with a large fixed mirror in pristine condition, no foxing. The top layer has glass bottles and jars with gilt lids, some minor abrasions to the bottle lids but nothing to spoil the look of them as they are still shiny.These fit into the case in neat compartments with one empty, the compartments under the bottles/jars have just a few marks from age and use. There is a jewellery section still with it's green velvet pad and two further empty compartments for small personal items which are immaculate with no signs of use. The name Shortrip and confirmation it is leather is embossed on the centre compartment. The bottom section of the case is deeper and lined in a dark brown, watered silk effect grosgrain fabric, there is a long ruched pocket along one side for small items. It is immaculate with no signs of use at all. The best bit is that it will fit a 13" Macbook and still leave room for overnight things.
A superb example of an iconic 50s train case by Shortrip, a sought after high end brand, in a very desirable colour and size. It is too heavy to be used for hand luggage on a plane (or, we suggest, to post outside of the UK) but for sheer glamour and luxe walking into a smart country house hotel it can't be beat, even by the new Mark Cross overnight case @ £2,600 plus (an exact copy of the one used by Grace Kelly in the cult 1954 film 'Rear Window' https://www.modaoperandi.com/mark-cross-pf15/rear-window-overnight-case-in-black) which has been produced to meet the increasing demand for stylish box bag style overnight cases and despite the price tag, has sold out in many outlets.
