This is quite a marvellous find, a shoulder bag and large silk scarf (scarf on the Accessories page), part of an exclusive collection of items which were produced by Liberty to celebrate the heritage of the Liberty company and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the iconic peacock feather design, created by Arthur Silver for Liberty in 1887. 'Hera' is one of their most iconic designs which is still popular and very sought after today. This set was bought as a gift but never used by the recipient. The shoulder bag still has the original tissue paper inside, together with the little card entitled 'The Hera Collection' detailing the reasons for the limited edition and some of the collectables included. The shoulder bag has a black felt, 'Liberty' embossed dust bag in which the handbag has been kept all these years. Both bag and dust bag are in pristine condition.
The shoulder bag is quite small, in a saddle bag shape, which was extremely popular in the eighties. The back, gussets and flap of the handbag are in a mid grey leather, as is the very long, fixed, cross body length strap. Over the flap is a further thin strap which has another Liberty icon, a pewter celtic knot motif, which covers the magnetic clasp which secures the bag. The leather is immaculate throughout with just a slight indentation to the back through storage, which should come out with warmth and use. The lining of the bag is in a silky fabric, pristine and unused, with a leather label stating ' Liberty made in England' and one zipped pocket. The front of the handbag is covered in the special edition exclusive colourway Hera fabric which looks and feels like silk but seems thicker and more robust. According to the accompanying card the design was 'specially hand printed onto silk foulard in an exclusive colourway for the Hera Collection'.
We have listed these separately although they came to us as a set and are from a limited collection. Both are fabulous items in their own right even if they were not part of an exclusive commemorative collection. As well as being eminently wearable they are also eminently collectable and being Liberty will always be desirable. We are biased we love Liberty, vintage or new.
