This is a classic 60s possibly early 70's vintage red lizard skin handbag with matching coin purse by Royal Warrant holders Mappin and Webb. It is in excellent condition, both inside and out, with no wear to the lizard skin, even on the corners or the twin handles, both of which tend to be the areas which bear the brunt of use. The base has some scuffing but nothing of note. There is a lizard covered top bar and in the centre is the gilt clasp bearing the initials MW. An early example of a company putting it's logo on display, something which is now commonplace. The lining is pale tan suede which is clean and with no major marks or stains but it does have signs that it has been used, a few marks to the slip pocket and a faint line along the bottom. (please see the photos). There is a gilt Mappin and Webb label affixed to the lining. With the handbag is an adorable little matching lizard coin purse which has some creasing to the lizard skin and some loss of gilt to the clasp and frame and some scuffing to the black leather lining from coins. The letters MW in gilt are still on the coin purse lining.
The red lizard Mappin & Webb lizard handbags are less easy to find than the more usual brown or tan in this particular design, especially in excellent condition. This is in lovely condition and smart enough to wear anywhere a smart handbag it required, weddings, the races, investitures... An elegant handbag, dainty enough for wearing day or evening and in a 'go with everything' colour. Perfect gift for her
