A stunning vintage 1983 large varuna wool wrap, shawl or scarf from very sought after Collier Campbell, probably designed for Liberty of London, in rich earthy colours of reddy oranges, greens and black. It's in an iconic and well known design with the Collier Campbell name and date woven into the fabric. For those unfamiliar with varuna wool it is a very soft, finely woven 100% wool fabric which is lightweight and warm but doesn't crush easily, so perfect for travelling. It is no longer used, so these vintage wraps, especially by Collier Campbell, are becoming increasingly rare to find, particularly with no damage. Unfortunately, varuna wool proves delicious to moths and most examples nowadays are vintage and therefore some have more holes than a Swiss cheese. Alas this one is not in perfect condition as it does have a few small holes visible on close inspection, the worst of which are in the photos above. We've seen these used as throws over sofas, or hung on a wall, adding a stylish vintage yet contemporary twist to a room scheme. Collier Campbell items from the era are very sought after and collectable and at BSV we love them, so try to find the best examples we can. The texture of the wool itself is still in pristine, crisp condition, with a perfect fringe and although there are a few holes, mostly tiny, the worst are in the photos above. It's in a particularly attractive and eye catching design, doubly desirable because of the name and date woven into the scarf.
This would be a very stylish wrap to wear, use as a throw or hang on a wall and properly looked after will last another 40+ years of glamorous wear. Perfect to pack for a holiday with the wearable colours! Notwithstanding the fact that it is not perfect, it is still very collectable and desirable and priced to reflect the imperfections. Perfect gift for her.
