This is a classic black crocodile skin handbag, suede lined and with a single top handle. It is in excellent condition. The crocodile skin is still supple and shiny with no cracks or splits and no scratches or other dings even to the base and sides. The rolled top bar is crocodile covered, with no scuffs or nicks and the attractive simple understated gilt clasp is unscratched with no tarnish and only the merest hint of diminution of the gilt. The handle is firm and strong with no creases or cracks, it is lined underneath in leather for added strength. The gilt frame to the inside of the handbag is in excellent condition with no tarnish and only minimal signs of use. The lining to the handbag is a pale golden tan suede which is in excellent condition, it is clean with hardly marks of age or use at all. The only mark of note is a mark which looks as though there has been a piece of tape or label stuck to it at some time (visible in the photos below to the left of the slip pocket). Other than that the lining is in fantastic condition for a handbag of any age let alone one which is 60 years old. There is a zipped pocket and two slip pockets which are edged in black leather (the same as the lining underneath the handle). There is a black leather label with Mappin & Webb Ltd embossed in gold on it.
This is an excellent quality handbag, in excellent condition, from a top end brand which is very sought after and internationally renowned for the quality of it's products. This is in a classic design, in a good size, in the most versatile and wearable colour, black. It could be dressed up or down and nowhere is too smart a venue for a crocodile handbag, particularly an M&W one, it is also in a great size, not too big to be worn as an evening/occasion bag but not too small for all essentials. Mappin and Webb bags are always in demand and this one should last for another sixty years.
