An absolutely adorable, small, dainty, very rare and sought after handbag from top end vintage brand Waldybag dating from the 1940s. These were the designer bags of the era, often called 'sweeheart bags'as GIs stationed in the UK during WW2 often bought them to send home to their sweethearts in the US. It is hand-painted, with micro glass beads embedded into the paint while wet giving the effect of jewels and being particularly stunning and irridescent in artficial light. It's in a pretty floral design on black silk and is lined in black silk satin with the gold embossed Waldybag name inside. The lining does have some minor age related foxing but is otherwise clean and free of marks or stains. There are numerous slip pockets for mirror/compacts which alas are no longer with the handbag, but can often be picked up individually at vintage shops or fairs or you can use you own (perhaps in black or gold?).
This Waldybag handbag is in excellent condition, especially for its age . There is very little wear or loss of paint/decoration to the handpainted frame and silk handle, even to the painted beaded clasp. Finding these vintage painted Waldybags in excellent or better condition is very difficult so this is a rare find. The quality of the handbag and the brand is such that H.Wald & Co was a supplier of handbags to HM the late Queen and other royal family members. These painted handbags also featured prominently at the recent 'Handbags' exhibition at the V&A museum in London and examples are on permanent display there.. A future heirloom. Perfect gift for her
